Maria Sharapova withdraws from Rogers Cup
TENNIS: World #2 Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the Rogers Cup 2013 in Toronto, due to hip injury, which she suffered during the Wimbledon Championships, earlier this year.
"I’m extremely disappointed that I’m unable to play in Toronto next week as it’s one of the best and most important tournaments of the year.
"I was looking forward to making a healthy return to the courts in front of my Canadian fans but unfortunately I’m just not recovered yet," the 6’2” Russian quoted.
The Tournament Director of the Rogers Cup, Karl Hale, was also not happy with this big blow.
"Maria Sharapova is one of the fan favorites here in Toronto and we are certainly going to miss her at Rogers Cup this year," Hale stated.
"We are very appreciative of her generosity in donating her time for us to raise some money for kid’s tennis.
"We wish her a speedy recovery and successful return to the tour as soon as possible."
However, Sharapova has began her preparation for the upcoming U.S. Open hard-court Championship 2013.
The 26-year-old, who owns a career Grand-Slam, has 29 Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) titles in her kitty. Besides, she clinched the silver medal at the 2012 London Olympic games, after losing the title-clash to world #1 Serena Williams.
