NBA Draft Class: The Best Ever
The NBA Draft Class of 2013 was announced on 27th June 2013 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Highlights of the draft included the first Canadian number one selection, the first Canadian pair of lottery picks, the first Iranian draft choice, and the last first round draft selections announced by then-NBA commissioner David Stern.
But, this draft had a different impact on me. It made me ponder on which year had the best draft class. It was simple to evaluate. Take the draft class and search for players who made the biggest impact and then see which Draft Class had the most impact. It was easy to select the best 3: 1984, 1996 and 2003. Choosing the best among them is all-together another story.
For me, 1984 is the Best Draft Class ever. It gave us the best player ever in Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan or MJ, revolutionized the game. Not just in terms of the baggy shorts that he wore, but also in terms of the way he played the game. For him, there were no limits and maybe that’s why he excelled in almost every game that he played. 1984 Draft Class also gave us Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley and John Stockton. It can even be said that this draft gave us the best point guard in John Stockton (Chris Paul and Steve Nash might soon change this), best shooting guard in Michael Jordan (No one in the near future can change this), best power forward in Charles Barkley (Tim Duncan might have a thing or two to say on this) and the best center in Hakeem (though I’d always prefer Bill Russel over Hakeem). The draft also had several other players who had solid careers such as Sam Perkins, Alvin Robertson, Otis Thorpe, and Kevin Willis.
With players like Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, it’s quite possible that the Best Draft Class of all time might be the 2003 Class. But for now, cheers to 1984.
