Ronaldo’s double condemn Jose Mourinho to defeat against his former team
Real Madrid have won the International Champions Cup thanks to a 3-1 victory over Chelsea in the final at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami on Wednesday. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal in each half for Real Madrid in front of 67,273 fans at the home of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.
Real Madrid quickly got off the blocks and their relentless pressure paid off in the 14th minute when Marcelo finished off a nice run to the goal by hammering a shot through the legs of defender Gary Cahill and past a diving Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech. However Chelsea leveled soon after in the 16th minute. Ramires split two defenders and went in against goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who charged off his line to cut down the angle. His effort was in vain, as Ramires flicked the ball softly over him and into the net.
However Real Madrid did not have to wait long as their talisman made it 2-1 in the 31st minute. Ronaldo was fouled from behind by Branislav Ivanovic. From resulting free kick from about 25 yards, his strike curled to the left, sneaking just under the crossbar and off the fingertips of diving goalkeeper Petr Cech. And in the 57th minute, Ronaldo struck again, perfectly timing his run toward the goal line and sending in a header for a two-goal advantage.
It was a disappointing loss for Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho who was facing his old club just three months after his acrimonious departure from the Spanish giants.
Apart from Madrid and Chelsea, six other teams had also participated in this pre-season tournament.
