Review of Day Three at the World Athletics Championships
The sparse but enthusiastic Moscow crowd had witnessed yesterday one of the most dramatic 400-meter finals in memory as British runner Christine Ohuruogu reeled in Botswana’s defending champion Amantle Montsho to claim gold by four thousandths of a second in a photo finish.
Reigning Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce followed in the footsteps of her countryman Usain Bolt as she produced an electric performance on her way to gold in the women’s 100 meters for gold.
Germany’s Raphael Holzdeppe created the shock of the Championships by winning the men’s world pole vault title on Monday as he defeated red-hot French favourite Renaud Lavillenie.
New Zealand’s Valerie Adams became the first woman to win four successive world titles when she secured shot put gold on Monday. The other major result was American David Oliver winning the world 110 metres hurdles gold medal.
Day four’s major talking point will be Yelena Isinbayeva, the greatest women’s pole vaulter of all time, as she gears up in front of her home crowd for her last major championship final. Also, all eyes will be on Grenadian Kirani James, 20, as he sets to continue his global domination of the men’s 400 metres by adding a second world gold.
