Day 6 at the World Athletics Championships

After a quiet Day 5 where only one gold medal was decided as 35-year-old Irishman Robert Heffernan won the Men’s 50km Race Walk, day 6 promises to be a completely different affair.  However Robert Heffernan story is an incredible one. Dubbed “Mr 4th” by many sports publications for his frequent finishes one place outside the medals, he cast aside a history of fourth-place finishes and broke a 30-year Irish men’s gold medal drought when he won the 50km Race Walk.

The men’s High Jump final will be a highlight of Tuesday’s action, along with the women’s Triple Jump; on the track, we’ll see finals in the men’s 3000m Steeplechase, women’s and men’s 400m Hurdles, and the women’s 1500m.

Red hot favourite for men’s long jump, Ukrainian Bohdan Bondarenko will be competing against two Russians, Olympic champion Ivan Ukhov and Aleksandr Shustov.

Another Ukraininan, defending World champion Olha Saladuha will be vying for the gold medal in Women’s Triple Jump. However the Russians will be her main competitors.

The main contenders for Women’s 1500 meters will be American Jenny Simpson, Sweden’s Abeba Aregawi and the hugely talented Mary Cain of US, who at 17 is the youngest woman ever to make the 1500m final.

In Men’s 400m hurdles, American Michael Tinsley starts favorite but faces a stiff challenge from Puerto Rico’s Javier Culson, compatriot Kenny Clement, Cuba’s Omar Cisneros and the evergreen Felix Sanchez. The favorites for Women’s 400m hurdles are Lashinda Demus, Perri Shakes-Drayton and Zuzana Hejnova. Last but not the least; Men’s steeplechase is likely to witness another dominant performance from the Kenyans.
