#2013 World Athletics Championships, #Mo Farah, #Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, #Usain Bolt
Day 7 review and the events to watch on Day 8
Great Britain’s Mo Farah created history last night by winning the Men’s 5000m and thus winning the distance double (both 5000m and 10000m). He became the only man apart from the great Kenenisa Bekele to hold the Olympic and World Championship distance double simultaneously. Silver went to Ethiopian Hagos Gebrhiwet with Kenyan Isiah Kiplangat Koech settling for bronze.
But Mo Farah was not the only one who completed his double. Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce completed a brilliant world championship sprint double on Friday as she added the 200 metres gold to the 100m title. Fraser-Pryce, twice Olympic 100 metres champion became the first woman since Katrin Krabbe in 1991 to win the world sprint double. However Fraser-Pryce’s victory was made easier by an injury to reigning Olympic champion Allyson Felix. Ivory Coast’s Murielle Ahoure, who became the first African woman to finish on the podium in a sprint at the world championships when she won second in the 100m, won the silver and Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare won the bronze.
In the other major results of yesterday, Germany’s David Storl retained his world championship shot title and the US won the Men’s 4X400m relay.
The penultimate day of the World Championships is going to be an exciting affair as Sprint Superstar Usain Bolt looks to add the 200m gold to his 100m title. The other major event of today will be the Men’s Marathon. Apart from the Men’s 200m and Marathon, 5 other gold medals will be decided today.
