Weekend 1, Saturday: Good start for United, Same old story for Arsenal

Questions were raised pre-season. Predictions were made pre-season. August 17th comes. All questions were answered. All predictions of a dismal start for United, put to the grave. United, put up a great show on Saturday. Van Persie and Danny Welbeck scored two goals and helped Manchester United begin its Premier League title defense with a 4-1 win at Swansea. David Moyes’s first league match as manager of United could not have gone better. Suddenly, the pressure of following his predecessor, Sir Alex Ferguson, who won 38 major titles in nearly 27 years at Old Trafford before retiring, does not feel so heavy. Yes, it’s just the first match. But, a good start is always a great motivator.

As with United, it is a new season for Arsenal, but the same old story. Arsenal fell, 3-1, at home to Aston Villa. Fans were again voicing anger at the long time (and under-performing) manager and his failure to sign a good player in the off-season.

As for Liverpool, Simon Mignolet saved a late penalty kick in his Liverpool debut to secure a 1-0 win over Stoke City. Daniel Sturridge smashed home the game-winning goal in the 11th minute. Stoke was given the opportunity to snatch a point when Daniel Agger handled the ball in the penalty area in the 88th minute, but Jon Walters’s penalty was saved by Mignolet.

Other results in the BPL were:
Sunderland 0-1 Fulham
West Brom 0-1 Southampton
West Ham 2-0 Cardiff City
Norwich City 2-2 Everton

Being a Manchester United fan, Saturday was AWESOME!
