AC Milan stunned as Italian Serie A gets underway
The new Italian Serie A season got underway yesterday with a huge shock as AC Milan were defeated 1-2 by newly promoted Hellas Verona. Former Italian striker Luca Toni scored both the goals for Hellas Verona. Andrea Poli seemed to have AC Milan on course for three points when he struck after quarter of an hour but Toni replied either side of half-time to give the underdogs an unexpected victory.
Hellas Verona, a former Serie A champion in 1984-85, has returned to the Serie A after 11 years hiatus from the first division of Italian football and their return could not have got better than this. It became a night to remember for the home fans as veteran striker Luca Toni was in immaculate form to condemn the Serie A heavyweights to an embarrassing defeat.
The other game of the opening day was between defending champion Juventus and Sampdoria. Sampdoria were the only team in Serie A last season to defeat Juventus both home and away. However, Juventus made sure that there will be no other shock on the opening day as they overcame a spirited Sampdoria team by 1-0. Juventus new boy Carlos Tevez scored the match winner.
