Day 3 US Open 2013 : Somdev in next round; Venus and Blake say Adios; Murray commences dominantly
The soggy weather, the daring concurrences, the sudden upsets, its all happen at the Flushing Meadows and making the tournament all the more striking. With Venus Williams a player of immense stature who upset the 12th seeded Belgian Kirsten Flipkens in the first bowed out respectably in the second round to Jie Zheng, in a stupefying 3 hour encounter. The American contested well against the Chinese, but finally gave in, in the last set tie breaker for 7-5. Another upset of the day was when the local favourite James Blake who vowed retirement after this Grand Slam was sent on an early heart-break in the very First Round by the Croatian Ivo Karlovic in a 5 setter, 3 of which were decided by Tie Breaks. Na Li ended her opponent Sofia Arvidsson in a flash, going in round 3 with 6-2, 6-2 on the board, while there was heavy struggle at the same Arthur Ashe, where Juan Martin Del Potro played against the Spaniard Garcia Lopez. Finally ending in a 4 setter, Lopez made Potro feel every point he took, with several winners being hit in one rally. After a gruelling 4 hours and 21 minutes, Del Potro breathed peace with 9-7 in the tie breaker of the fourth set. Andy Murray had no problems finding the right volleys; he didn’t give enough time to Llodra to find firmness beneath his foot, and bettered over him in 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 a win. At the Louis Armstrong Stadium, it was the Pole Agnieszka Radwanska who dominated over the Spaniard Torro-Flor in a 6-0, 7-5 statistics. She fumbled a bit in the 2nd set, but nevertheless it ended in her favour, making her proceed to Round 3. Among the seeded players, Sloane Stephens, Jamie Hampton, Suarez Navarro and in the mens the Russian Kevin Anderson, Mikhail Youzhny had no problems entering the next round. While the winless Rajeev ram in the earlier 4 editions of the tournament upset Fabio Fognini in straight sets earning a slight sheer on everybody’s part. While seed 21 Benoit Paire, faced defeat at the hands of the Russian Bogomolov. Lleyton Hewitt made into the 2nd round of the slam sending Brian Baker back to his home.
A special mentioning is required for the Indian Somdev Devburrman who survived the 5 setter against the Slovakian Lucas Lacko in a 3 hour contest at Court-13. The match was deterred by rain, which did break his sync, but the results were favourable at last. He would now face the wrath of the 20th seeded Italian Andreas Seppi who dealt away with Xavier Malisse in the first round, to qualify for Round 3.
So that was what occurred on Day3, lined up for you on Day 4, we have a plethora of matches specially in the women’s league, Serena Williams counters with Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan, she should have ‘little’ problems dealing with dealing with her at the Arthur Ashe in the morning, while the 4th seeded Italian Sara Errani takes on country-mate Flavia Penetta for a Round 3 qualification. The Danish Caroline Wozniacki, 2nd seeded devourer Victoria Azarenka and even Svetlana Kuznetsova would be having their matches today. Many eyes will be set on the teen Victoria Duval who sent Stosur back to the Kangaroo land, who takes on the experienced Daniela Hantuchova in the later part of the day. Among the men, the ones benignant with their presence at the Arthur Ashe would be Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer while David Ferrer takes on the Spaniard Roberto Bautista at the Louis Armstrong’s. John Isner, Sam Querrey, Richard Gasquet as well as Milos Raonic would be trying to make their way up into the top 32.
