The Fading Professor !!!
Nothing seems to go the Arsene Wenger way these days. Living on a thin line he has been criticized by the Arsenal fans for not spending big in the transfer market. What is more frustrating is the fact that they have funds available with them to spend but Wenger’s philosophy of not buying players who are overpriced has seen him not move beyond inquiries. So far he has been fortunate enough to see Arsenal qualify for the champions league. The day he fails to deliver a champions league spot would probably draw curtains to his illustrious spell at Arsenal.
Arsenal have progressed a lot under Wenger. They have everything right for a top football team. They have a healthy financial statement. They have implemented a wage structure. They have brought some great players through their academy and the most important - they were successful in bringing up a new stadium which clubs like Liverpool have failed to achieve so far. But their decision to let go of their star players has always frustrated the fans. Premiere Leagues delight Robin van Persie left Arsenal after he felt that arsenal lack the ambition of winning a silverware. The fact that they haven’t won a title 2005 speaks for that.
Jamie Carragher who is working as a TV pundit with Sky remarked on his debut show "There’s only one section of people overspending at Arsenal — the supporters". Arsenal have failed to make a major signing so far having been linked with a number of big players. Interest in Wayne Rooney faded, Luis Suarez bid was also rejected after Wenger made a 42 million pounds + 1 pound bid for the Uruguay international. Wenger’s low valuation of Yohan Cabaye angered Toons boss Alan Pardew who rejected the bid outright. Similarly he let Gonzalo Higuain let go after they failed to enter in a bidding race with Napoli.
Wenger is still is among the most respected managers. He plays with a philosophy of attack that is great to watch. The fact that he has been able to hang on to that Champions League spot inspite of spending so less speaks volumes of him. Hopefully with time still left for the end of the transfer window he gets in a few players and wins over his critics. You never know a few shrewd signings and he is able to bring on a new set of invincibles.
