Day 11: Murray finds Wawrinka wall; Djokovic qualifies for the 8th time in the Semis; Aza and Serena play their Semis today
As US Open converges towards Day 14, what it hasn’t stayed is peaceful. With upsets to file right since Day 2, the pen never stops as we finished“Dreadful Day for Defending” Champions. What went just like anticipated on Day 11 was when Novak Djokovic overcame the No. 21 seed, Mikhail Youzhny in a 4 setter, that too with a glitch of dropping a set for the first time here. While the first two sets were a normal buy-in for the Serb, the crowd saw Youzhny finding some ground in set 3 which he snatched away 6-3. Some brilliant fore-hands and winners across courts were applauded, but it wasn’t to last as the 4th set was an example of class on the part of Djokovic. The No. 1 seed, dominated 6-0, to enter the finals at USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Centre, for the 4th consecutive time. (He had made to the Semi-finals of the Open for the 8th consecutive time). Well if that was some expected news, what went totally haywire was the straight set loss of Andy Murray. The dark horse Swiss, No. 9 seed Wawrinka showed some spectacular game to whizz past the defending Champion. Murray looked highly uncomfortable throughout the match, having forced to play all aggressive. He couldn’t set his feet and play his game in any of the three sets. With brilliant shots to fork, and very few errors to post the guy who found himself in the shadows of Roger Federer, finally broke the ice and entered the first Grand Slam Semi-Final of his career. He plays, on Saturday the more decorated and superior Djokovic for a bout to reach the finals at the Meadows. Well two of the other down-turns in the match were when Brian brothers fumbled badly in the Semi-Finals of the Men’s doubles category. Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek the 4th seeds dismantled quite a few things for the Brians’ in the 3 setter match they played. They ended their coveted dream of the Calendar Grand Slam which would have been historic in the tennis game-play. They now face Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares tomorrow to decide for the title. Day 11 also saw the leading pair of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci perish to the Williams’ sisters in a disappointing 6-3, 6-1 game.
Today brings more clarity on the realms of the Flushing meadows, as the first crown would be decided for in the mixed doubles category between un-seeded Abigail Spears and Santiago Gonzalez and Andrea Hlavackova and the former Us Open Champion in the same category Max Mirnyi. The Semi-Finals of the women will be up for court, as Victoria Azarenka would try to end the dream run of the Italian Flavia Penetta and right after we would see the defending Champion Serena battle the formidable Na Li for a place in the finals yet again. After this match, in a brief stint she comes out again with her sister to play the Semis of the Women’s Double event, against the 5th seeded Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.
Well that’s news from the 3rd last day of the last Grand Slam. Keep your connections intact and keep reading for an update on the last 3 days of the event.
