Zimbabwean Cricket: Rising from the Ashes.
In one of the most promising upsets in recent times, Zimbabwe produced an excellent team performance to overcome Pakistan by 24 runs in the 2nd test at Harare. An excellent 2nd innings spell from Chatara earned him the match of the match, whereas Younis Khan was declared the man of the series.
It is quite fascinating to see such an under-dog coming up with such a performance. Once upon a time, Zimbabweans were not a weak team as of now. Even though they could not win many matches, but they were never considered minnows. Legends like the flower brothers, and Heath Streak rode the Zimbabwean cricket forward.
Then as time passed, they retired. Though they did produce some good talent, but lack of facilities and worsening economy affected the cricket team badly.
Then the bad became worse, and they could not even afford to hold the series, leave alone tour other nations. Their failing performance and failing economy finally resulted in their partial isolation from the cricketing world.
Then for the last year or so, some teams have toured zimbabwe for a ODI series, which includes India. Though they were steam-rolled by the visiting teams, their fighting spirit was always visible.
Then came this Pakistani series, a blessing in disguise for the Zimbabweans. They managed to win an ODI, and even draw the test series (mind you, they were the dominant team for the most part of the series).
Now they have got the initial push they wanted. They have very talented players like Masakadza and Taylor. They need to build on their current performance, and rise in the international cricket scene, and become a becon of happiness for the Zimbabweans.
