UEFA Champions League : Match Day 1 as it happened on Wednesday
After Cristiano Ronaldo’s amazing hat-trick on Tuesday, it was time for Lionel Messi to emulate his great rival on Wednesday and he duly did so as he also helped himself to a hat-trick of his own in Barcelona’s 4-0 demolition of Ajax Amsterdam in Camp Nou. In the other match of Group H, AC Milan huffed and puffed to their hard fought 2-0 win over a resolute Celtic team with two late goals.
Group E saw the first big shock of this year’s Champions League as Europa League champions Chelsea were stunned at home by Swiss Champions FC Basel thus spoilt Jose Mourinho’s first match in the Champions League in his second essay with Chealsea. In the other game, Schalke 04 registered an emphatic 3-0 victory over Steaua Bucharest.
Group F which is the group of death of this season’s Champions League saw last year’s runners up Borussia Dortmund defeated by a well organized Napoli side 2-1. Arsenal also got to a winning start with an invaluable away win at Olympic Marseille.
High flying Atletico Madrid continued their impressive start to the new season with a 3-1 home success against Zenit St. Petersburg thus underlying their credentials as the team to watch in this year’s tournament. The other Group G encounter saw FC Porto winning 1-0 away at Austria Wien.
