Beijing Open Mens Round 1 Review
The grand slams are long over, but the mini-slam, a.k.a the World Tour Finals, is still remains, and the race for its participation is gaining the heat. While the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray are already selected, barely a few hundred points separate the other 5, and even few points separates the next three.
But brushing aside the points calculation, the first round in the men’s draw of the Beijing Open went quite smoothly for the seeded players. The only major upset was that of Tommy Haas, who went down to another old horse, Lleyton Hewitt. Grigor Dimitrov disappoints once again, and much more consistent performances are expected from a player who is dubbed as "baby federer".
Nadal, Djokovic, Berdych and Ferrer breezed past their first round opponents. India’s Devvarman, who came through the qualifying rounds, went down in the first round against Fernando Verdasco in straight sets.
Much focus will be on four players, thoughout this tournament. While Novak Djokovic’s No 1 ranking is at stake at the hands of Rafael Nadal, Stanislas Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet are going neck-to-neck for the final spot in the ATP World Tour Finals.
