Top 5 current midfielders in English Premier League

Seven rounds of matches have been played so far in the Premier League season and strangely its Arsenal and Liverpool who have emerged as the pacesetters instead of the usual suspects from Manchester and the mega-rich Londoners. Arsenal’s dominance has been due to the midfield master class their midfielders have been displaying day in and day out whereas Liverpool have thrived due to their strike power. This season’s Premier League has really been about some amazing midfield performances and in this column let us look at the 5 midfielders who have taken the Premier League by storm.

1. Aaron Ramsey:
Aaron Ramsey is probably the most in-form midfielder in the world at this moment. With a pass completion rate of 86.8% this season, the prodigious Welshman seems to have finally come of age. The 22 year-old has already scored 4 goals and assisted 2 goals which is an impressive return for a deep lying midfielder. Adding icing to the cake, Ramsey capped off a fine month by deservedly winning the Barclay’s Premier League player of the month award for September.

2. Mesut Ozil:
Arsenal’s amazing start to this season can be mainly attributed to the masterful performances of this midfield maestro. The £42.4 million club record transfer fee has showed his every penny worth in the 4 league matches he had played for Arsenal till now. “The Assist King” has already 3 assists to his name and has one of the highest pass completion rate with 88.2%. Ozil is the embodiment of ball-control, vision, creativity, finesse and improvisation and with him in form; Arsenal can actually aspire for the league title for the first time since 2004.

3. Stephane Sessegnon:
One midfielder who has impressed most is West Bromwich Albion’s attacking midfielder Stephane Sessegnon. The 29-year-old Benin international has been in imperious form since he had joined West Bromwich this transfer window from Sunderland. In his first game for West Brom, he made a goal scoring debut in their win against his former club Sunderland but it is his performance in the next two games against Manchester United and Arsenal which has caught everyone’s attention. Against Manchester United he was in sensational form as West Brom defeated the Red Devils at Old Trafford after 35 years. And last week he put on another inspired performance as West Brom played out a 1-1 draw against the league leaders.

4. Ross Barkley:
Among all the young players in this season’s Premier League, the 19-year-old Everton player has impressed the most and his splendid displays in the Everton midfield has earned him a call to England’s National team. He has started in all the seven matches so far scoring two goals and having a pass completion rate of 88.7%. He is the young player to watch out for this season.

5. Gylfi Sigurdsson:
After Tottenham have invested nearly £110 million in acquiring new players, few would have thought that Gylfi Sigurdsson would play such an integral role this season as he has in the 5 games he had played so far. He has been very effective playing on the left wing having already scored 3 goals and winning one Man of Match award so far. His scintillating form has kept out club record signing Erik Lamela out of the first team.
