Barclays Premier League: Arsenal Vs Liverpool Match Report - Cazorla and Ramsey stunner sends Gunners to the top of the Premier League with five point’s clear crevice.
Arsenal beat Liverpool 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday to broaden their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points.
Arsene Wenger’s men had gone into the game on the back of a Capital One Cup rout to Chelsea but bounced back to open up a healthy advantage over the chasing pack in the league, especially pertinent following their London rivals’ 2-0 misfortune at Newcastle United prior in the day.
However, Arsenal answered the critics who had questioned its character for a sustained title bid after successive home defeats by Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League and after crashing out of the Capital One Cup against Chelsea.
Arsenal made no mistake in underlining their title credentials at the Emirates as they transformed a dominant performance to secure triumph.
The greater part of the pre-match hype had been about what impact Reds forward Luis Suarez would have against the club which tried to sign the Uruguay forward for £40,000,001 ($67.53 million) in the northern summer.
Santi Cazorla fired the Gunners ahead somewhat against the run of play on 19 minutes, lashing the ball home after his bullet header had come back off the post.
Ramsey then made sure of all three points when on the hour he cracked in a sublime 25-yard half-volley for his 10th goal of an amazing crusade as Arsene Wenger’s side renewed belief ahead of next week’s European trip to Dortmund and Premier League game at Manchester United.
Suarez had not been at his brilliant best but his threat was ever present, and he flashed a warning to Arsenal that this game was not done yet as he swerved an angled effort against the post with Szczesny beaten.
Suarez then broke through seconds later but sent his finish wide of the target, a poor effort for a player of such high calibre.
Mesut Ozil almost added a third as Arsenal ended in comfort. And this was a performance that will have increased Wenger and Arsenal’s confidence that they can maintain a serious challenge this season.
“Arsenal were better than us” – Rodgers
Rodgers’ men did not learn from that let off, though, and were duly punished a couple of minutes later, Ramsey shooting past a defenseless Mignolet with a radiant volley.
Liverpool undermined an unrealistic comeback in the end stages, Suarez twice spurning glaring chances and Wojciech Szczesny denying substitute Philippe Coutinho - however Arsenal saw out a deserved triumph and are presently five points clear at the top of the table.
Man of the Match – Aaron Ramsey
Flop of the Match – Aly Cissokho
