Arsenal's Defense: Is it Underrated ?
Until a few months ago, Arsenal’s defence was considered one of the most fragile among the top European clubs. But this season, the Gunners’ defence has been great, if not excellent.
For past few years, defence has been considered Arsenal’s biggest weakness. This weak link meant that the Gunners easily considered goals, many times nullifying their attacking advantage. But this season has been difference.
Arsenal have kept clean sheets against three formidable attacks so far already, namely Tottenham, Liverpool and recently Dortmund. And any defence which can keep these teams in check, deserves appreciation and applauds.
Arsenal’s two center-backs - Mertesacker and Koscielny compliment each other superbly. Mertesacker’s reading of the game compliments Kosciely’s aggressiveness, while Koscielny’s speed compliments Mertesacker’s slow pace. In other words, the duo compliment each other superbly, forming one the best central defending pair this season so far.
Sagna has been superb both defensively as well as while attacking. In absence of Theo Walcott on the right wing, he has taken the responsibility of creating the pressure down the wing.
On the left-hand side, Arsenal have Kieren Gibbs - one of the most improved players in last few years. Though sometimes he makes defensible mistakes, but he is undoubtedly very talented.
Arsenal’s another strong point is that they have one quality back-up in each of these positions. Vermaelen is the one of the best defender in the world, and it’s a shame that Arsenal’s captain spends most of his time on the bench. Carl Jenkinson at an age of 19 is still young, but is hailed by many as the England’s next right-back. Monreal is another talented player, who has to wait for his chance due to impressive performance of Gibbs. But due to his talent, Arsene Wenger many times deploy him in the midfield.
Thus, one can’t doubt the quality that Arsenal has in it’s defence. If their defence can continue their fine form, Arsenal can continue their battle for the trophies this season and can end their long trophy drought.
