Can Fellaini contribute to Man Utd ?
Fellaini has so far failed to impress the Manchester United loyalists. Ever since his £ 27.5 million transfer from Everton, Fellaini’s every move has been under the lens. I can remember the havoc Everton had caused in the 4-4 match at Old Trafford in the 2012- 2013 season. Defense duo of Ferdinand and Evans looked completely out of place. Fellaini had orchestrated the comeback.
Come 2013 and things are different over at Manchester United. United’s tactics are planned by another Scotsman, namely David Moyes. Fellaini followed him to United along with a host of other coaches from the Everton setup. Fellaini had excelled in the role of No 10 at Everton. That’s where he can make the most of his height. He is the Xavi of the upper body. His chest control and heading abilities makes him a very lethal No 10. In the 2012-2013 season, the Belgian won more aerial challenges (151) in the Premier League than the 11 midfielders that played for Manchester United combined (94). He also scored 12 goals.
Rooney was not so keen on staying with United, but Moyes has managed to hold on to the striker for now. Rooney‘s presence forces Moyes to deploy Fellaini as a Defensive Midfielder. You don’t have to be a genius to realize that he is being asked to play outside his normal position. Also, the heroics of Adnan Januzaj and Fellaini’s hefty price tag just adds to the existing pressure to perform.
United fans should give Fellaini some time to adjust. There is no guarantee that Rooney won’t try to force a move to Chelsea next summer. Maybe then we will get a real opportunity to watch Fellaini at his best. He can surely contribute as a No 10. The question still remains as to whether he will get that opportunity or whether he will end up as one of the Sebastian Verons of United.
