Who's the Best Keeper in the Premier League currently?
A comparative analysis of some of the top notch stoppers playing in the EPL currently:
1.David De Gea (Manchester United)
After a shaky start to his Manchester United career, the former Atletico Madrid keeper is definitely coming of age now, say football pundits. He arrived at Old Trafford as a lanky, young lad who had immense potential and great reflexes and shot stopping abilities but his aerial skills were always under the scanner. After an impressive display against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu last year, the transformation was almost complete in the game against Arsenal last week. Just 23 and raring to go, it is not long before calls for his promotion to the national squad are answered. For now, United need to find a way to keep him away from Barcelona and Real Madrid, who are rumoured to be gunning for him.
Current Season Form: You could say that its not been a great season so far but that has partly to do with the United defence as well, letting in 13 goals from 11 games with just 3 clean sheets.
2.Petr Cech (Chelsea)
The Czech national keeper has been the foundation stone of Chelsea’s recent successes in the Premier League. Since his arrival at the club, he’s won 3 EPL titles, 4 FA Cups, 1 Champions League and a Europa League. His strengths definitely are his brilliant skills within the penalty box and the highpoint of his shot-stopping career would have been Arjen Robben’s penalty save in extra time which helped Chelsea win the Champions league last year. Remarkably so, he has saved 21 out of 88 penalties faced in his career, a saving rate of 23.86%. At 31, Chelsea’s old guard is still going strong!
Current Season Form: He’s fared better than De Gea but still lower than his standards, letting in 10 goals from 11 games with just 3 clean sheets.
3.Hugo Lloris (Tottenham)
When he arrived at White Hart Lane last season, he was not the automatic first choice for Andre Villa Boas, despite the reputation he carried and was given a complementary role to the in –form Brad Friedel. His uncanny style of rushing after the strikers during a one-on-one situation gives defenders the much needed boost that the custodian would prevent a goal in case the defence is beaten. He plays with a high line and is confident of his own abilities, truly giving a meaning to the concept of the last man in defence and the first line of attack. His style of play suits Spurs’ counterattacking style and he has been instrumental in launching quick attacks on the opposition.
Current Season Form: He’s definitely been the best this season with 7 clean sheets from 10 games and letting in just 5 goals!
4.Joe Hart (Manchester City)
The flamboyant England keeper possesses an impressive natural ability and pundits predict that could well be the Lions’ best keeper they’ve seen in a very long time. England keepers in recent times have had a reputation for making huge errors in an England shirt, be it Robinson, Green or James, but Joe Hart was touted to be the next big thing after Peter Shilton. He was instrumental in City’s title winning campaign, making some crucial saves on the way and easily one of the best in that year. But his performance seems to be dipping lately, and many experts believe he may have temperament issues. He definitely has the potential but needs to do something to go that extra mile and be regarded as the best in Europe.
Current Season Form: He has been woeful between the posts this season, with errors against Cardiff and Chelsea costing them the game. It reflects in his stats this season, with him letting in 11 goals in 9 games with just 3 clean sheets.
Based on reputation and current season form, Hugo Lloris is my pick. He definitely has the potential to become a world-class keeper and follow the likes of Casillas and Buffon.
