Southampton's dream run:How long will it go ?
Premier league has entered into twelfth week with its share of surprises since beginning of this season, the biggest being the dream run of southampton this year which has made it to stand at rank three, very close to likes of Arsenal and Liverpool. Saints have put up a magnificient display of aggression and will-to-win against most of the opponents and an attitude like this, along with few match winning performances can really light up their chances at league. Pochettino’s boys have come up a long way and there is no turning back now. Saints were struggling at the bottom of the Premier League table in November, last season but this time of year, they’re remarkably 17 points better off, and there’s no doubt why the management, players and fans at St. Mary’s are dreaming of creating history .Even bookies have paid an attention and Southampton’s odds to win the title have been raised to 150-1 after being 3,000-1 in majority of books preseason.
Pochettino’s team has been heavily praised for their defending and undoubtedly they have the league’s best defense, conceding just twice, and playing an exciting style of high-pressure soccer.Saints tend to play a high-pressing style game, somewhat like Borussia Dortmund where they defend from the front and crowd out teams.Reason for this has been a dynamic back four with highly rated English youngsters Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw filling the fullback slots and José Fonte and Dejan Lovren deployed at the centre halves.Midfield has been in good shape with Morgan Schneiderlin and Victor Wanyama holding in firmly .Schneiderlin has been a find of the season and is claimed to be one of the best holding midfielders in the league. The understanding between the trio of Lallana, Lambert and Rodriguez has been brilliant and they have demonstrated an amazing display of an up-tempo style of football with sharp, direct passes and moves.
But,not to forget,Saints still haven’t played much against traditional powerhouses like Arsenal,Manchester city,Chelsea etc and still have a long way to go.Upcoming next four clashes, would give a much clearer picture as to how long they will continue with their winning streak, with trips to both the Emirates and Stamford Bridge to come followed by home ties at St.Mary’s against Aston Villa and Man City. Its too early to say whether they have a shot at Premier league title victory , their delightful play has attracted everybody’s attention and is impossible to ignore. With Pochettino at the helm and a storming line of young English talent at the core, it’s fair to say that their meteoric rise from League One to Premier League, is not just a stroke of luck, but rather a statement of aggression and performance to their opponents.
