Sunil Chhetri becomes Indian football's all-time highest goalscorer
Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri rewrote the history books yesterday when he became the country highest goalscorer. Sunil Chhetri scored his 43rd goal to overtake Bhaichung Bhutia as the country’s top goal scorer in a friendly match against Nepal at Siliguri which India won by 2-0.
Chhetri gave India the lead with a 21st minute strike to go past former captain Bhaichung Bhutia’s 42 international goals before Clifford Miranda added another in the 49th as India produced a dominant display over Nepal at the Kanchenjunga Stadium.
The 29-year-old striker who plays his club football for Bengaluru F.C. scored his 43rd goal for India in his 73rd match. Bhaichung Bhutia had 42 goals in 107 international matches. Next on the top scorer list for India are I.M. Vijayan with 40 goals from 79 matches, Shabbir Ali with 23 goals from 72 matches, and P.K. Banerjee with 19 goals from 36 matches.
