Moyes and United: Winning days are here again?
Moyes and Manchester’s statistics this season: Played 18 Won 11 Drawn 4 Lost 3. Win rate of 61.11%. Not bad if you were at Everton Mr. Moyes, but this is Manchester United. Devastating loss to Manchester City in the EPL and even Albion managed to put one past them, and people are already calling for Moyes Head.
Let us face it – United did not have a great pre-season. The legend that was Sir Alex retired. There was constant speculation on the future of Wayne Rooney. Arsenal managed to land Ozil and City managed to land Negredo. United could manage only Feliani.
The season had Arsenal and Liverpool run away with victories; Arsenal with 8 and Liverpool 7 out of 11. United were probably getting used to Moye’s style of play in the EPL and a few results that could have gone either way went against them. The result they slipped down in the league standings.
Sir Alex once said that those 1-0 games is what wins the league for you, the games where you do not play great but still slog it out to get the 3 points. With Van Persie’s headed winner against Arsenal, United and Moyes got just that.
The season is going to get difficult as we head towards Christmas break but would one win be able to put United back in the league title race? United have Cardiff, Tottenham, Everton, New Castle and Villa lined up in the coming weeks. Teams United expect to get full points from.
But in the long run, the Premier league season looks to be a 4-5 horse race. Arsenal seems to be revitalized by Ozil and Giroud, Liverpool has got off to a bright start, Mourinho is back at Chelsea and City seems to have got an answer to their striking woes. The win against Arsenal could catapult Moyes and United to short term success, but long term Moyes would have to look at the January transfer window to re-enforce his squad.
More importantly, he will have to bring back the aura a United side under Sir Alex had once it took to the pitch. That will take time and many more Arsenal like victories.
