Vertonghen: From the best in Holland to the best in England?
Jan Vertonghen, born in Belgium, bred in the talent factory of Ajax and a part of the defensive line of Tottenham. Before his move to England, he was the Dutch Player of the Year with Ajax.In only his second year in the Premier league, he has the Player of the Month Award once and was a part of the defensive line of the team of the season in 2012.
Vertonghen had made it clear to his boss this week that he is not happy playing left back and wants to move to the place he belongs: center back.
So that is what he is, an outright centre back. How many times have we heard the story of a strong centre back being the captain of the team: Terry at Chelsea, , Ferdinand at United and so was Vertonghen at Ajax. This is how great defenders are made from the likes of Hierro at madrid or Maldini at Milan. Obviously, it would not be fair to compare Vertonghen to these greats as of now because these are early days.
A great season behind him, Vertonghen is poised to go from strength to strength. Villas Boas showing confidence in his abilities by calling him one of the best centre backs in the world would add to his confidence. With Belgium having booked their ticket to Brazil in 2014, the experience of playing against the best forward lines in the biggest stage of them all awaits. The future looks bright for the Belgian.
