English Premier League : Is Arsenal Going To End Their Premier League Trophy Drought This Season?
There were times in the Premier league when Manchester United and Arsenal albeit Liverpool’s pre Premier league period were the only ones considered as the title contenders for the Premier league and carried a thunderous rivalry amongst them. However Sir Alex Ferguson ensured that the Red devils maintained their reputation of being the Champions but the same cannot be said for Arsene Wenger’s men who have lost the winning capability from past so many years and let the teams like Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham giving them an extremely tough time to maintain their position even in the top 4. Arsenal have never won the Premier league after the season of 2003-2004 and have never been able to secure even a top 2 position 2004 onwards, a club that once used to be a powerhouse.
But the sun has been shining brightly in the Emirates this season and the Gunners have revamped themselves bringing in a positivity and sheer brilliance in their game throughout the 2013-14 season. Albeit the shocking loss in the first match of the season, they have lost only one more match to Manchester United at Old Trafford and are sitting 4 points atop the table after one-third of this season. They have shown an exquisite play and won difficult matches against Tottenham, Liverpool and for a fact Southampton who have been just magical this season. Their performance in the Champions league have also been levels above their performance in previous seasons, thereby winning 4 of their 5 group matches this season although still not through to the knockout stage as they are placed in a very tough group along with the likes of Napoli, Borussia Dortmund and Marseille FC.
The one single marquee signing of Mesut Ozil for 42 million pounds has filled in a new energy in the team and revolutionized the game altogether and they look far better than so many of their previous seasons lately. Aaron Ramsey has been in the form of his life and has been never better, is presently owned by 59% of the Fantasy league players, the most in this gaming format this season. Despite Oliver Giroud being in brilliant form, Arsenal possess one of the strongest midfields of this season – Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta, Mesut ozil, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky all being world class players and possess special unique capabilities of their own.
However the road is tough ahead as the they are about to face Everton, Manchester City and Chelsea in a row after their 2 matches against Cardiff City and Hull City over the next week. Presently the only tough accomplished teams they have faced are Liverpool and Manchester United where they have lost 1 and won 1. Manchester City is gaining back their form and all their players are performing brilliantly and hitting the net which they showed in this weekend’s 6-0 mauling of Tottenham Hotspur, thus it would be extremely difficult to even salvage a draw against them which they couldn’t even do against the pretty ordinary United team 2 weeks back. Chelsea might be a chance for them but who knows what Fernando Torres, Oscar, Mata or Hazard might do to them and their not so strong defence who have managed to gather just 4 clean sheets this season.
So, although the Gunners are on a brilliant run this season and look very firm and confident at the top, still two thirds of the season is left and the toughest part lies ahead. Arsene Wenger’s men would have to step up the level even further to take as much lead as possible to avoid any pressure against the strong teams in the near future. Should they finally end the trophy drought this season, it would be a big big accomplishment and I believe one of the most happiest days of Arsene Wenger’s life if he gets his hand on the Premier league trophy this season. I fear he might go crazy.
