Strongest team in the West?
Russell Westbrook is back and the Oklahoma City Thunder are rolling as expected. The San Antonio Spurs are performing at their usual best with the big 3 of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili still going strong and Danny Green and Kawai Leonard stepping up. But the team that’s been most impressive this season in the west is the Golden State Warriors.
After going down fighting to the San Antonio Spurs in last season’s playoffs, the Warriors have made all the right moves in the off season. From signing Andre Iguodala to renewing Mark Jackson and Andrew Bogut’s contracts, the management has made sure that team has overcome its shortcomings from the previous season. What else has changed in the young warriors? Can they still come out of the Wild wild West?
The answer to all these questions lies with one man – Stephen Curry. After being snubbed of an All Star place last year, Curry has been playing at such a high level, that he is getting MVP chants even in away games. The best fact for Golden State is that Curry has managed to remain injury free and has logged n considerable tome in every match he has played. His ability to shoot from all positions on the floor and to drive in and finish with both hands makes him one of the most pure scorers in this era (alongside Lebron James and Kevin Durnat). Now let us have a look at the rest of the Golden State players and find out what makes them so dangerous:
1. David Lee: Combined with Curry, they make one of the best pick and roll duos. He can shoot from outside or take anyone one-on-one making him invaluable to the offense.
2. Andrew Bogut: Strong central presence and much needed defensive help. Averages 9.2 rebounds which is very high considering the fact that Curry and Klay Thompson very rarely miss.
3. Klay Thompson: One half of the Smash Brothers along with Stephen Curry, he has the potential to be better than Curry due to his physical strength. Like Curry, he can spread the floor and also drive to the basket. He is an excellent defense player also, making a possible All Star candidate this year.
4. Andre Iguodola: Brings in experience that is much needed in this young team. He is an excellent defensive player and is also a clutch shooter.
Though the season has only began, the Golden State Warriors promise to entertain us with raining 3s, beautiful passes and of course, the brilliance of Stephen Curry. Here is to wishing the GSW all the best for the season !
