Liverpool desperate to hold on to Suarez
With Liverpool not featuring in the Champions League, Suarez should be on the top priority list of several clubs across Europe in the January transfer window. While there have been reports linking him to a potential January move to Real Madrid, Kops boss Brendan Rodgers has maintained that the Uruguayan is happy at Anfield and ruled out any move in the January transfer window. Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti and President Florentino Perez are long time admirers of Suarez and with doubts persisting over the future of Karim Benzema at the club, they will be more than willing to shell out big money to tempt Liverpool to sell Suarez in January. Ancelotti believes an attacking front three consisting of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez could be unstoppable and Madrid are prepared to spend up to £45m to complete the dream triumvirate.
Liverpool are well aware that the only way that they can retain the services of the Uruguayan next season is by qualifying for the Champions League-by finishing in the top four of the Premier League which they have failed to do in the past few seasons and they would certainly be confident of achieving it this time round with Suarez in red hot form, steering Liverpool to second place in the table, just 5 points behind leaders Arsenal.
After completing a lengthy domestic ban for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic, which saw him miss the start of the season, Suarez has shown his best form in a Liverpool shirt, and he has played a major role in the club mounting a title challenge. Suarez’s form, though, came off the back of a turbulent summer which saw him ask for a move away from the club, and Liverpool turned down an offer from rivals Arsenal amid claims there was a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ that would allow the striker to leave if a Champions League club made a bid.
The main reason behind Liverpool’s sensational start to the season has been the form of their strikers-Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. They have quickly become the most dreaded combination upfront and have complimented each other brilliantly thus far this season.
The desperation of Liverpool to keep Suarez at Anfield is evident from the fact that they are willing to open contract talks with Luis Suarez, despite him having two and a half years left on his present deal.
The Reds’ positive start to the season has strengthened their position and, should they finish in the top four for the first time since 2009, they will do all they can to convince Suarez to stay and lead their return to the Champions League.
Liverpool might not yet be genuine title contenders but they are in a great position to mount a realistic challenge for a top-four finish. And if Rodgers can bring Champions League football back to Anfield, the club will know their chances of keeping Suarez happy are significantly improved. So far it is looking good for Liverpool but the festive season with packed schedules can change everything. Liverpool thus cannot afford to take their foot off the accelerator.
