Sourav Ganguly: The Sports Minister that India needs today!
Sourav Ganguly, popularly known as Dada is a former Indian cricketer and captain of the Indian national team. He is regarded as one of India’s most successful captains in modern times.
He was awarded with the Banga Bibhushan Award from the Government of West Bengal on 20 May this year.
It was all due to his leadership skills, former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has been offered a ticket to contest the general elections next year by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but is undecided on whether to accept the offer.
It is learnt that the offer has come from the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, who has promised to make the Bengal sports icon the sports minister in the Cabinet if the party comes to power.
"Yes, I’ve an offer. But I’m still undecided on what to do. I’ve been busy for last few days. I’ll let you know soon," Ganguly was quoted as saying in a leading Bengali daily.
The speculation has been doing rounds after he met Varun Gandhi through a common friend in the capital in mid November.
Varun, the national general secretary of BJP, is also the observer for West Bengal.
Sourav Ganguly will not be the first cricketer to join politics. Recently, Sachin Tendulkar became a Rajya Sabha member. Earlier cricketers like Navjot Singh Sidhu, Mohammed Azharuddin and many others had joined politics after their cricketing career.
Indian athlete Milkha Singh said in an interview that a sport person if made a sport minister will do more justice to the post. If Sourav Ganguly accepts BJP’s offer and if BJP wins 2014 elections, he will be the first cricketer to be appointed as Indian Sport Minister. As he proved a great captain for the team, a person with great leadership qualities will surely prove a great minister to the country and he will surely justify his position and he is the Sports Minister that India needs today.
