Tim Sherwood: Not the man for the job at Tottenham

Tottenhams’ 5-0 thrashing by Liverpool on Sunday was their biggest home defeat since Chelsea beat them 6-1 in 1997. Tottenham’s loss of 6-0 to Manchester City also rewrote similar text in the history books.
Good enough statistics for the board to fire the manager? Going by what has happened, the answer is Yes.
Villas Boas was getting into record books for the right reasons as well. Best ever win record in the Europa league, highest winning percentage compared to any Tottenham manager and highest every premier league tally for Tottenham last season. Not good enough to keep him at his job at White Hart Lane.
And In comes Tim Sherwood, who spent 5 years playing for Tottenham in the midfield, aged 44 with no prior coaching experience. He was the captain of the Blackburn Rovers side that won the Premiership in 1995 and was an England National Player.
But Is he the man for the job when we are in December and the league is half way through.
The answer is No and the reasons are simple.
Tim Sherwood was the head of Football Development at Tottenham when AVB was in-charge. Working with the big boys is a different story. They are not kids, they are pros. Does Tim Sherwood know how to handle them? In all probability, he does not.
Alan Shearer was the last person who took up the top coaches’ job after being a player. He lasted less than 2 months at Newcastle. Not questioning his ability, but being a good coach requires that you come up the ranks and not pole vault to the top spot.
Last Season, AVB brought into the club Soldado, Lamela, Paulinho, Christian Eriksen, Étienne Capoue, Vlad Chiricheș and Nacer Chadli. As any manager in any field will tell you, you bring resources into your team when you have a vision for them. Visions are not realised in a span of 16 league games. Sherwood now has the momentous task of trying to figure out where exactly to fit these players on the pitch and the role each one of them should be assigned.
If Sherwood is a man with a plan, it would not be of any surprise that some of these new signings would want to leave the next season. Waste of money for the club that would be.
In the next month, Tottenham have Arsenal, United and City coming up. They have already crashed out of the Carling Cup, the first game in charge for Sherwood. In his two games in-charge, Adebayaor has been sighted leading the defence line, Lamela has been looking out of place and team looks confused.
Neither is this the correct time for Sherwood nor the correct place to rebuild this team. Whatever AVB was thinking of as he put this team together in the last two seasons, Sherwood will differ on.
Sherwood might be having a great plan but the time he takes to execute it is what will ruin the start of his managerial career and Tottenham’s top five finish ambitions.
