Does R.Ashwin deserve a place in the playing 11?
R. Ashwin has been India’s no.1 spinner over the last year or so with, Harbhajan Singh being dropped from the side, and the likes of Amit Mishra waiting in the ranks. Too be very honest, Ashwin has been effective in most of the HOME matches, but the same can’t be said when it comes to AWAY games, on pitches not suited for slow bowling.
So while Ashwin is a certainty in the starting line-up for matches on Indian soil, the same can’t be said about the matches abroad. So that brings us to the question, as to wether he deserves his place in starting 11, for matches on foreign soil. Well for Test Matches, we must remember that he is an useful contributor with the bat as well and sticks around, to keep the tail wagging. Hence he must be evaluated both from a batting as well as bowling asset. However the only alternative to Ashwin, seems to be Jadeja, who has been in outstanding bowling form over the past year. The decision to drop Ashwin and take Jadeja instead as the lone spinner against South Africa, wasn’t a bad decision either, but I felt a specialist spinner’s presence would have boosted the line-up. Hence Ashwin should always feature in the starting 11 for India.
