Time for Mata to leave Chelsea?
Juan Mata, aged 25 from Spain is a midfielder who can run at defenders and score goals as well. He is a product of the Madrid Youth Academy and was a part of the Spain World Cup winning squad in 2010 scoring a goal in the final against Italy.
He was the golden boy of Valencia and together with David Villa, he had brought many glories to the club.
Sold to Chelsea in 2011 due to Valencia’s debt problem, he had shone there scoring goals and assisting strikers.
That was until 2013 when a certain ‘Special One’ arrived at Chelsea. Mourinho has clearly indicated that Mata is not part of his plans at Chelsea midfield. He relies on Hazard and Lampard supported by Oscar and Ramirez for the midfield role that Mata favours.
The rise and rise of Eden Hazard has also diminished Mata’s hopes of a regular place in Chelsea’s starting line up.
World Cup is coming up in June in Brazil this year and Mata has done nothing this season to show his boss in Spain that he should be picked for the Spanish playing eleven. He would be eager to prove a point to the Spanish coach before the tournament starts.
Are Chelsea and Mourinho ready to give him a chance to prove his point? Looking at the season so far, they are not. Cleary Mata is out of sorts at Chelsea. The Chelsea Number 10 is clearly not the favourite at the Bridge for the midfield role.
At 25, Mata probably has his best years of football ahead of him. He is the kind of player around whom managers can build their midfield around. But if he does not get enough playing opportunities to improve his skills, he would be forgotten as a had been.
No one knows this better than the player himself and this is the reason why he wants to leave Chelsea.
There are many clubs in the EPL and many more outside who are in need of an attacking midfielder. Juan Mata will fit in perfectly into these roles and will have ample time to prove his mettle for the Spanish World Cup squad.
Do not expect Chelsea to hand over Mata to a EPL rival but a move to Atletico Madrid looks most likely. Playing in Spain again where Mata excelled not long ago would be a boon for the player.
If he does not leave Chelsea, he might become another Kaka at Real Madrid, a player whose career was sabotaged by the ‘special one’.
