Djokovic, Serena breeze through; Kvitova, Venus upseted
The first Grand slam of the year started of with a bang, with quite dominating performances from the top seeds. But there were casualities, either due to a surprising performance from an underdog, or due to the heat.
But it was business as usual for most of the top seeds. Defending champ Novak Djokovic over came Lucas Lacko in straight sets, despite some resistance from the latter in the 2nd set. Serena breezed past his first round opponent Ashleigh Barty 6-2, 6-1, which was her 23rd consecutive win since Cincinnati.
And now the tougher matches. Earnst Gublis has a hard time to maintain his emotions in his 4 setter victory over J Monaco. Jerzy Janowicz, known for his epic "HOW MANY TIMES! " outrage he did here last time, had a tough day against wild-card J Thompson. Jerzy won the match 1-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 ,6-1.
Other top seeds had a fairly good day, some of them benefitted with the retirement of their opponents. A Bogomolov Jr and A Golubev, opponents of Fognini and Wawrinka respectively, withdrew with some health issues. Ageless Tommy Haas was also a victim of an injury, as he withdrew midway through his second set.
And the upsets, which were rather noticable in the Women’s section. Kvitova fell in a tight 3 setter to the unseeded L Kumkhum. Also, Venus Williams, former finalist, fell to E Makarova in 3 sets.
Other players who had a good day on the field were David Ferrer, Li Na, Istomin, home-favourite Stosur, Ivanovic. All of them had an easy 3/2 set victory.
