Australian Open: Wawrinka stuns Djokovic in a 5-set marathon, Eugenie Bouchard creates history

Men’s Singles:

Stanislas Wawrinka produced a brilliant performance as he dumped out World No. 2 and defending champion Novak Djokovic in a marathon five-set thriller by 2-6 6-4 6-2 3-6 9-7. Thus came to an end Djokovic’s winning streak at the Australian Open which started in 2011 and resulted in three consecutive champions in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Wawrinka will play against Tomas Berdych in the semi-final for a place in the finals. Earlier, Tomas Berdych reached his maiden Australian Open semi-final with a gritty 6-1 6-4 2-6 6-4 victory against World No. 3 David Ferrer.

Women’s Singles:

Eugenie Bouchard became the first Canadian to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open when she defeated Ana Ivanovic 5-7 7-5 6-2. The 19-year-old defeated the former World No. 1, who had stunned Serena Williams in the last round, showing great poise and composure and thus on her way to became the first teenage grand slam winner in eight years. Also through to the semi-finals is two time losing finalists and World No. 4 Li Na, who was at her best as she defeated Flavia Pennetta 6-2 6-2 with considerable ease.

Tomorrow, Rafael Nadal will take on Grigor Dimitrov and Roger Federer will play against Andy Murray in the other quarter finals while in Women’s section, Victoria Azarenka will play Agnieszka Radwanska and Simona Halep will take on Dominika Cibulková for place in the semi-finals.
