Australian Open Day 12: Nadal defeats Federer to set up final with Wawrinka
Rafael Nadal produced his best performance of the Australian Open 2014 by dismantling his great rival Roger Federer in straight sets to book his place in Sunday’s Australian Open men’s final. Nadal won the match with the scoreline 7-6 6-3 6-3 and thus extending his head-to-head dominance over Federer to 23-10. Nadal will now prepare for his 19th major final overall and should he win on Sunday for his 14th major title, he will draw level with Pete Sampras.
Waiting for the world No.1 in the final is Stanislas Wawrinka, who who play in his first Grand Slam final. Nadal has won all 12 of their matches to date and will be favoured to make it 13-0. Should he do it, the Spaniard will become the first man to win every major twice or more in the Open era.
In the Women’s Doubles, Italian pair of Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani defeated Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in three sets by 6-4 3-6 7-5. The Italian pair clinched their fifth Grand Slam title together and have become the first duo to defend the Australian Open women’s doubles crown since the Williams sisters four years ago.
In tomorrow’s Women’s singles final Li Na will be playing against Dominika Cibulkova.
