Will Newcastle be able to prove themselves without Yohan Cabaye?
The start of this New Year seems to have turned against the favor of Newcastle united. Newcastle fan’s got a big blow in January’s transfer window when the club decided to transfer its star French midfielder Yohan Cabaye to PSG for 20 million pounds.
Cabaye, Alan Pardew’s former playmaker always exuded the aura of the coollest boy in school and, give or take the odd bout of moodiness, proved a powerful dressing-room figure. He also exerted a quite startling effect on his colleagues. Stats say that Newcastle won 47% of their Premier League games when Cabaye featured on Pardew’s team-sheet but, without him, triumphed in only 19%. Cabaye was the ultimate combination of visionary passing range, magnificent set piece execution & devilish touch of aggression in tackle as well as in goals. He was a natural creative catalyst that the team had.
With Yohan Cabaye departed, now the Magpies are left in a deep trouble with fans raising questions about the intention of the club. The opening of the transfer window was hoped as a ray of light in the dark but the club’s unpopular director of football Joe Kinnear has fallen on his sword after failing to make a single permanent transfer in two transfer windows. The decision to let go Cabaye without signing a new player with similar capabilities has not only let the fans angry but it is said to cost Joe Kinnear his job. This has now created a void in the team which has left Alan Pardew with very few options and he might be forced to change his strategies for the coming games.
One of the possible option for Newcastle in this situation might be to redeploy the richly gifted yet infinitely less defensively aware Hatem Ben Arfa in the No.10 role just behind the principal striker, a position Cabaye had made his own this season. The other option available can be to offer the job no.10 to far more athletic Moussa Sissoko, leaving two from Ben Arfa, Yoan Gouffran, Sammy Ameobi and Sylvain Marveaux to create play on either side of Sissoko in a 4-2-3-1 formation. The problem with Ben Arfa is that he has made just 11 starts for the Toon army this season and is yet to prove his mettle for the club. Though Alan Pardew is fully confident about him but the reality is he will take some time to establish himself as an important part of the team. Same is the case with the Dutchman Luuk de Jong who was a new recruit on loan from January’s transfer window. In all the team looks in an average position but what remains questionable still is the midfield region. The best possible way to fill this void could had been recruiting Clement Grenier. He had that creativity & perfect free kicks which would help Newcastle win matches & move above its current spot. With not signing him & keeping the void in midfield, Newcastle may welcome danger with some crucial matches yet to come.
