The top 5 most overvalued players of this season's IPL auctions

The IPL Auction 2014 was a display of some surprising buys from the 8 franchises. While some players were not picked by any of the franchises, some players were bought at very high bids, and some were undervalued.

S Badrinath, the Tamil Nadu and India batsman, has made public his disappointment at not being bought by a franchise at the IPL player auction. Badrinath, who went unsold on the first day of the auction, was brought back for bidding again on Thursday as part of the unsold lot, but for the second time none of the eight franchises, including his previous owner Chennai Super Kings, showed any interest in the middle-order batsman.

But, the interesting aspect of 2104 Auctions was the overvaluation of some of the unexpected players. These players were:

1. Yuvraj Singh (₹14,00,00,000): The famous Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has grabbed the attention of everyone, by bagging the highest bid this season. The left-handed batsman, known best for his six sixes against Stuart Broad in T20 World Cup 2007, has been out of form for quite some time now. He has not been playing for India recently, and had a pretty average IPL 2013. Playing for RCB this season should bring good luck for Yuvraj, as he has a lot to prove this season.

2. Dinesh Karthik (₹12,50,00,000): Bagging the second highest bid of ₹12,50,00,000 at the IPL Auction 2014, Dinesh Karthik must be a happy man. But, with many more talented players available in the pool, Karthik was overvalued during the auctions. Though last IPL was pretty good for him in terms of his batting, but still, Karthik going for such a high bid has raised some eyebrows. Quite certainly, no one was expecting him to be one of the biggest buys of this season with the likes of Kevin Pietersen present, who would be available for the whole tournament.

3. Karn Sharma (₹3,75,00,000): The Sunrisers Hyderabad bowler for IPL 2013 has been bought back by the team for ₹3,75,00,000. Karn Sharma is a young, talented player who can bat as well as bowl. But, his above average performance in the IPL 2013 doesn’t justify the price tag he has received for this season’s IPL.

4. Glenn Maxwell (₹6,00,00,000): The highest bid for IPL 2013, Glenn Maxwell has been bought by Kings XI Punjab for ₹6,00,00,000. Though Maxwell has been a very efficient all-rounder for Australia, his performance had not been up to the mark in IPL 2013. After sitting out for most of the matches, the hard-hitting all-rounder couldn’t make an impact when he got an opportunity to play. He has to play well this season in order to justify the price tag attached to him.

5.  Murali Vijay (₹5,00,00,000): Bought by Delhi Daredevils this season, Murali Vijay has a price tag of ₹5,00,00,000. While Murali Vijay is struggling to find rhythm in his batting style, he has a lot of work to do in the IPL 2014.
