Olivier Giroud: Arsenal's title challenge depends on him.
If there is any hope for Arsenal to win the Premier league, especially after the loss against Stoke today it is on the strikers to score goals. The striker who has been the Go-to man for Arsenal and who can revoke the club’s chances to win the league is ‘Olivier Giroud’.
One of the most talented strikers to have emerged from France in recent years, Olivier joined Arsenal in July 2012 from then-Ligue 1 champions Montpellier, for whom he had top- scored in their ‘double’ win the previous season. Right from his inception into the team, Giroud has settled into life at Arsenal. His first season was a perfect start to an aspiring career, scoring an impressive 17 goals. His strengths include his mobility, technical skills and aerial prowess. He is adroit in holding up play and also bringing others into attacks.
The return of Giroud amongst goals against Sunderland was the need of the hour, especially after Arsenal’s poor form recently in the league. The team needed some inspiration from somewhere, especially because of the string of tough fixtures in the Premier league as well as the Champions league over two weeks. With fixtures against City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Everton in the coming weeks, it is imperative that Arsenal cannot afford to let themselves loose. The responsibility on Giroud is even more, and it therefore becomes important for him to answer all the critics who feel, Arsenal lack on the attacking front. Giroud has to notch a level up and convert those 50-50 chances, especially against top sides. Although Giroud is not one of the most attractive playmakers unlike a Suarez or Aguero, but his ability to link up the play with Ramsey, Wilshere, Cazorla, Ozil and Rosicky has been one of the main reasons to Arsenal’s high scoring rate. The French striker can create great vision around him, and if any of his teammate fall within that radius, he can link up creatively and score goals.
His brace against Sunderland was necessary considering the fact that he was left on the bench for a couple of matches and also some unwanted headlines floating in the media about his private life. However, the striker looks focused and ready to accept the challenges. This could be the differentiator in Arsenal’s performance in the coming games. That is probably the reason why, Giroud becomes extremely important for the team’s offensive tactics in most of the matches.
With just two victories out of their last 6, Arsenal have allowed teams like Chelsea, Manchester City to capitalize on the advantage. Gooners have seen their team blow up too often when chasing glory on multiple fronts in recent years, so they will understandably deal the trebles with caution.
It all boils down to the end result, and with a striker’s influence in a complete attacking frontier that Arsenal project, Giroud’s role will decide Arsenal’s chances of winning the league.
