Can the English team really move on after the forced exit of Kevin Pietersen ?
The year 2014 hasn’t proved to be a very good one for Kevin Pietersen, as the South African has recently been sacked from the England Cricket Team, and the word out there is that “Kevin Pietersen’s England career is over”. As the England Management wanted to start the rebuilding process of the English Team, they decided not to select Pietersen for the team’s next outing in the Carribean. The failure of the England Cricket Team against the Australians during the Ashes tour has led to the sacking of Kevin Pietersen, who could manage only 294 runs in 10 innings for England. The fact that Kevin Pietersen was the second highest scorer for England during the test series baffles everyone even more regarding the terrible decision taken by the ECB against the batsman.
Though there have been comments about his attitude in the dressing room, and his behaviour with other players, it is quite clear that the England Cricket Team is definitely going to miss having Kevin Pietersen around. The great England batsman has been an important part of the process of taking England Cricket to where it is today. Making his ODI Debut in 2004 and Test Debut in 2005, Pietersen straightaway came into limelight because of his powerful hitting. Being the top scorer for England during the 2005 Ashes series, Kevin Pietersen played an important role in driving England to their first Ashes victory in 19 years.
The England Cricket Team has already started missing Pietersen, as their performance has been quite poor so far in the on-going West Indies Tour. Without the big name of Kevin Pietersen in the middle order, the team is suffering from the lack of a stabilizer of the innings, who can accelerate his scoring rate whenever he wants. Having already lost the first match of the tour, and almost making a big deal out of the target of 160 in the second match, England’s batsmen have a lot of practice to do, in order to keep up the standards of the England Cricket.
Yes, the situation is pretty tough for the England Cricket Team right now. But, this can be a new opportunity for the likes of Eoin Morgan to cement their place in the Playing XI of England. Pietersen’s exit has left a clear path for Morgan to return to the English side, and this time, it should be a permanent entry for him. England’s recent performances in the two ODIs against West Indies have shown how much England needs Eoin Morgan right now. With an average of 40.55 in One dayers along with 6 hundreds to his name, Morgan has definitely proved that he has the firepower to take over the role of Kevin Pietersen in the English Team.
