BOOM BOOM Afridi : The phenomenon
Shahid Afridi started his career as a top-order ODI batsman, who would come at the start of the innings and display some sheer power hitting. In his initial few years Shahid Afridi got a lot of acclaim for his batting explosive starts at the top. He went on to score the fastest century vs Sri Lanka at Nairobi, a record which stood for almost 15 years or more until one Corey Anderson overtook him. Shahis Afridi also held a number of 18-20 ball fifties under his belt.
However in the middle of his career, the expectations of BOOM BOOM Afridi began to take a toll on him. It was like he had to come and smash the ball out of the park, right from ball one, irrespective of the merit of the delivery, and hence he would often get out without creating any havoc. Moreover during this period Afridi began to explore the quality spin bowler in him, and his bowling drastically improved as he became a wicket-taking option, and the go-to man alongside Saaed Ajmal.
However off late Afridi seems to be re-discovering himself as a finisher, and looking to add stability to the frail Pakistan middle-order which crumbles under pressure. This Asia Cup he has already exalted himself to an entirely new level, with his innings against India followed by the one against Bangladesh, both being match-changing ones, when Pakistan seemed to be losing the plot. His towering sixes leaves all bowlers perplexed, and most of his mishits too clear the fence with ease. Thanks Afridi for all the fireworks and may you keep entertaining your fans like the good old days, when you would dispatch every odd delivery to the fence. Your BOOM BOOM batting is indeed a treat to watch.
