Robin van Persie: The most selfish footballer alive!!!
It all had started before the transfer of Robin Van Persie to Manchester United. Back in 2004, Van Persie was signed by Arsenal from Feyenord for the convenient sum of £2.75m. In his first season at Arsenal it became evident that Arsene Wenger has signed a player with extraordinary talent. Unfortunately, like in many other cases, his talent was accompanied with some negative sides.
One of the most obvious problems was his selfishness on the field. In a team like Arsenal where the team effort is put first, such individual displays are not usually the best solution to maximize the effectiveness of the attack. Van Persie’s failure to comply with that rule did him no favor in the beginning of his career at Arsenal.
On top of that, it became evident that Van Persie was an injury-prone player. He suffered a number of injuries throughout his years at Arsenal which put him aside from the action for a long period of time.
He also had difficulties with keeping his discipline intact, resulting in a dismissal against Southampton in his first season at the London club. To make things worse, Robin also experienced difficulties outside of the football field.
It took years for Arsenal & especially Arsene Wenger to transform this kid from a normal immature player to a superstar footballer. Also, it cannot be denied that he has benefited from the good influence of the people in the club, of Arsene Wenger, of ex-captain Thierry Henry, and of his countryman Dennis Bergkamp. With all the trust and faith on him, Van Persie was made captain of the gunner team to take the club to new heights.
Arsenal thought that they have finally found a cure for Van Persie’s selfish attitude but unfortunately they were wrong. In 2012 Van Persie accepted the offer for transfer to an old rival team of gunners, Manchester United. This act of Van Persie had brought hatred in the minds of gunner fans and this time they don’t seem to be forgiving. Van Persie had literally betrayed a club which was instrumental in his development as a world class player.
Piers Morgan a true gunner fan also condemned this act of RVP. He said “Funny, I really thought RVP was different. But he turned out to be just another mercenary, heartless, selfish” he wrote. “What a sickening betrayal of Wenger too - the man who stood so loyally behind RVP through years of injury.”
To aggravate the issue much further, recent news suggest that there are speculations about RVP returning back to the old club as Manchester United is not doing so well this season and exit looms above Manchester. If Robin Van Persie does this again, he might conform to the whole world that he is really a selfish player who has no loyalty to any club in this world. At this point some might argue that it is all fine in sports and such events. For those people, look back where you came from. Try to visualize the efforts taken by people to make who you are today and then think again, is it the right thing that I am doing? There is certainly a need of self-introspection required for RVP.
