Thiago Silva vs. Vincent Kompany – (who is better??)

Both Thiago Silva and Vincent Kompany are arguably the best defenders in their leagues and they captain both their club and national teams. Both players are, coincidentally, with clubs that have Middle Eastern owners who invest a lot to bring in the best players from around the world. With two players being in very similar circumstances, it becomes unavoidable to compare and contrast them. The players both have a massive figure (although slight difference in height), they play in central defense and are capable of pulling a shift in defensive midfield, which means physically and talent wise, they are very alike.
Firstly, Thiago Silva, 28, joined Paris Saint-Germain from AC Milan in the summer of 2012 for a reported fee of €42m. A fee well spent as the defender led PSG to their league title in 19 years - and only the third in their whole history. Not only that, but he was appointed captain in only his first season after displaying immense leadership qualities. He was also able to lead PSG to a quarter-final spot on their return to the Champions League, narrowly losing out to Barcelona. He has previously won the domestic Italian league with AC Milan and also a Copa do Brazil with first club, Fluminense. Meanwhile, he has secured the Confederations Cup and the silver Olympic medal with the national team.
He has made a career total of 299 games, having chipped in with 23 goals, but as a defender these statistics do not say much about your ability. Silva can play the ball out from defense and can dribble fairly well, as he displayed with an impressive solo goal that was cancelled against Nice because the ball had slightly gone over the line for a goal-kick. His pace and ability to read the game does not only make it hard for strikers but also creative midfielders who encounter a lot of difficulty in sliding the ball pass him. At 6ft, weighing 79 kg, the Brazilian captain is not that tallest of defenders, but everything else he has to his game over compensate his height.
Vincent Kompany, 28, has been in Manchester City for five seasons - an incredible number bearing in mind all the changes that have occurred since he arrived from Hamburg for £6m. In 2011, he was awarded captaincy for both club and country around the same time as his profile had significantly boosted after a wonderful season. In 2011/12 season, he led Manchester City to a historic league title win, breaking a 44-year drought having won the FA Cup during the previous year. Meanwhile, he won two league titles in native country Belgium, with his first club, Anderlecht. He has made 55 national team appearances and has a career total of 16 goals in 351 appearances. However, he could have made slightly more as he has had several injury problems over the past couple of seasons. Kompany’s main abilities consist of well-timed tough tackles, dominating the air and aggressive runs forward when the team is losing. Weighing 83kg and being 6ft 3in tall, he towers over most opponents and uses his massive physique to his advantage.
But to be very frank it is really difficult to choose between the two, but I will support the Brazilian because the guy from Brazil has performed at the global stages and eventually won the Confederation Cup with Brazil, the thing is that Kompany still has to perform with Belgium to really prove his worth and with world cup around the entire nation can see who is better and the Belgian will leave no stones unturned to prove his worth.
