King’s XI Punjab, won the toss and chose to bat. They posted a total of 168/5 with only 3 runs coming off the last over. Mumbai Indians in reply, chased down the total with 5 balls to spare and 5 wickets in hand thanks to a late flurry from Kieron Pollard.
Back on home turf, Mumbai Indians pulled off a true team effort to seal their 1st win of the season and end a miserable 5 game streak. The win featured crucial bowling contributions by Corey Anderson - 1/17 (2 overs), Harbhajan Singh - 2/34 (4 overs) and Malinga - 1/25 (4 overs), (2) a pair of great catches in the deep from Ben Dunk to remove Maxwell and Miller and (3) substantial batting contributions from CM Gautam – 33(29), Rohit Sharma – 39(34), Keiron Pollard – 28(12) and Corey Anderson again – 35(25).
Punjab’s challenge was lead by Wriddhiman Saha – 54* and 2 catches, Maxwell – 45(27), Sandeep Sharma – 2/29 (3.1 overs) and Rishi Dhawan – 2/23 (4 overs).
Punjab performed well enough to win, but were let down by their bowling spearhead Mitchell Johnson who conceded 20 runs in the 19th over. Akshar Patel, whose economy before today was 5.72, went at 10 an over in his 4 overs.
For Mumbai Indians, Ambati Rayudu aside, everybody produced a significant contribution to lead to the win. Kieron Pollard, who produced a flurry of big shots at the end of the innings to win the game, was the most expensive bowler in the game conceding 32 runs in his 2.3 overs.
With this win, Mumbai Indians extended a remarkable run of 9 consecutive wins at Wankhede. They will hoping to continue that streak and make this the basis for to revive their top 4 hopes for the season.
