Is an FA Cup title more important than a 4th place finish for a club of Arsenal’s stature?
In the 2012-2013 season, when the two Manchester clubs were fighting for the league title, Arsene Wenger defended his sides lack of silver ware over the years gone by saying, "For me, there are five ‘trophies’ – the first is to win the Premier League, the second is to win the Champions League, the third is to qualify for the Champions League, the fourth is to win the FA Cup and the fifth is to win the League Cup.”
Arsenal started the 2013-14 season well and were genuine title contenders till a dreaded spell in February/March 2014. They were leading the 4 way battle only to fall out and up battling for the 4th spot with Everton. In any season prior to this, Arsenal fans would have been content and pointed to injuries to the likes Ramsey, Walcott, Ozil et al for their decline. Having lead the Premier League for most of the season only to end up 4th, was a disappointing result for Arsenal – injuries or not.
Having lead the table for the longest period this season, coming 4th was the equivalent of wanting Batman and getting Robin. When your coveted goal of the 4th place doesn’t feel like silverware no more, the FA Cup win brings back the sense of achievement that Arsenal have associated with the 4th spot for so long. Wenger may not acknowledge it, but the FA Cup win after coming back from 2 goals down will lend some much needed winning mentality to this side.
In Spain, for so long the title was a 2 horse race where as the likes of Sevilla, Valencia and Atletico Madrid set their targets on the coveted Champions League spots. Arsenal did the same for the better part of the decade as Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and even Liverpool competed for the league title. Yet you would have been foolish to even consider Arsenal to be at the same level as Sevilla, Valencia or Atletico. They were undoubtedly a notch above them but their season aims were the same. Arsenal had dropped their ambitions that low.
After fighting for the Champions League spot for so long, and often missing out to, Atletico were a team that lacked that sense of glory and accomplishment in recent times. They won the Copa Del Rey last year and qualified at the Champions League spot. Today, they are La Liga champions and preparing for their Champions League final encounter against local rivals and Spanish behemoths Real Madrid. There are far too many parallels that can be drawn between these two clubs. The most important thing though, is that Winning inspires future Wins. Atletico’s 2009-2010 Europa League success inspired their 2011-2012 repeat which in turn inspired their 2012-2013 Copa Del Rey success and this season has been built on that.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United collection of titles was started by the 1990 FA Cup win. Arsenal are a legendary club and have been on the precipice of success for a while now. This FA Cup win can do what no amount of 4th place finishes would not have achieved. They are now trophy winners. This is how dynasties begin. Arsenal can now do that. Will they manage to do it? The answer to that might lie in the double meaning to the word ‘manage’.
