Who has been the star of the IPL,the flop of the IPL and this season's surprise package
Star:-
A fairly easy one, this one goes to Robin Utthappa.
After mediocre performances as a middle-order batsman in four of his first five innings he played in the UAE leg of this season, Uthappa requested the team management for a chance to open the innings, which is his favourite batting position. He went on to make consistent contributions every time he strode forward to open. In eight successive innings as an opener, he has never been out for anything lesser than 40.
Flop:-
A pretty unusual name, but Dale Steyn it is.
The No.1 bowler in the world irrespective of the format, is known for giving worst time to the batsmen but has been at the receiving end more often at this year’s IPL. With the Hyderabad side filled with Indian bowlers in Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Irfan Pathan and Ishant Sharma, the pacy South African was expected to be leading them by working out the batsmen which makes the job easier at the other end.
But the story has been following a different script this season and add to that he was taken on by AB de Villiers and MS Dhoni for 23 and 24 runs respectively. Three of his most expensive IPL overs have come in this IPL.
Surprise Package:-
There were quite a few names, but I would go for Yuzvendra Chahal
Despite the tight leash on the number of opportunities before Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) picked him up for Rs. 10 Lakh — he was a part of Mumbai Indians’ camp earlier, where his chances were stifled — Chahal’s assertive leg-spin generated some buzz in India’s domestic scene in the last couple of years. During RCB’s home fixture against the Delhi Daredevils (DD), it provided a glimpse of the reason behind those murmurs.
It was coined ‘ball of this season’s Indian Premier League (IPL)’ by pundits viewing from the confines of the commentary box and also elsewhere. Kevin Pietersen, one of the most mentioned names prior to the commencement of the tournament, and rightly so for the annihilation he can let loose with his wizardly willow, and whose defences started to look impregnable during the second half of his innings, marched down the crease to hoick young Chahal out of the M. Chinnaswamy stadium, only to be bamboozled by the vicious, orthodox leg-spin that had him stumped against the run of play. After a brief grimace, Pietersen couldn’t help but nod his appreciation on the way back. The dismissal was a classic case of David slaying Goliath.
