Blues Brothers

Blues Brothers

History will look back on the Stamford Bridge’s 2013/2014 season as a failure.

You see, Chelsea FC had a transitional team this season. They had no strikers. The last few weeks of their campaign had almost 8 first-team injuries, and they dropped 6 points to some pathetic refereeing decisions by first Chris Foy, and then Mike Dean.
But for a club of their stature, and England’s best European team this decade, Chelsea did poorly.

Poorly in the sense that when the season started, expectations weren’t very high, but with every brilliant performance Jose Mourinho master-minded, with every splendid block by John Terry and every splendid dribble by Eden Hazard, it looked like they could overcome their glaring issues.

After all, this is Chelsea FC we’re talking about. This season, they proved that their never-say-die spirit was still alive by winning in all circumstances in games against Liverpool, Manchester City and an unforgettable goal bundled in by Demba Ba against his boyhood club, Paris Saint-Germain.

They put Arsenal to the sword at Stamford Bridge, demolishing Arsene Wenger’s 1,000th match celebrations. They beat Liverpool on either side of their amazing unbeaten run that lasted 16 games. They beat league champions Manchester City home and away, and knocked out the French Champions from a tricky 3-1 down position.

But those were the good days. On the bad days, Atletico Madrid came to Stamford Bridge and did the unthinkable – outplay Chelsea FC on their own ground and still triumph. Ramires had to dive to secure a draw against West Bromwich Albion. Mike Dean defeated Chelsea all alone, and he even managed to intercept the ball in midfield and launch a Sunderland counter! Chris Foy sent Willian off pathetically at Villa Park. Basel, Sunderland and Manchester City also beat them in the cups.

But worst of all, they had 3 failures of strikers. The midfielders might not have been very incisive (the hard-working Willian finished the season like a blunt spoon) but they still managed to create many good chances. Yet Chelsea failed to score, because they didn’t have a single true striker in the team. Eto’o and Demba Ba had good patches and performed in a handful of big games, but were ultimately too inconsistent to every do anything good in the league. Fernando Torres showed everyone ONCE AGAIN why he should’ve been returned to Liverpool ages ago.

But not all was bad. Clearly, this team is the best Chelsea team since Di Matteo’s splendid one, and before that Carlo Ancelotti’s title-winning side. Jose Mourinho has brought them back to their level, and John Terry is once again unrivalled in defence by anyone in the world. The defence has been from another dimension, and many of the players – especially Hazard and Azpilicueta – have become world class overnight.

This season was a failure for Chelsea, but not a disaster.

If they’d had a single striker, a finisher who can finish crosses and free-kicks, then they’d have swept all trophies before them.
The Blues Brothers will never fall, and next season, armed with a new gun in front, Chelsea FC will conquer all before them!
