Germany vs Portugal: Can Cristiano Ronaldo and co. contain the German juggernaut?

37 goals in only 11 matches. This has been a goal-laden World Cup and tonight’s blockbuster meeting between two European heavyweights Germany and Portugal promises to be another high scoring affair. Both the losing semi-finalists of the Euro 2012 will not leave any stone unturned to start off the tournament in the best possible way: that is to win the game.

After Lionel Messi’s brilliant goal last night against Bosnia, it is time for Cristiano Ronaldo to show his credentials as one of the two best players on the planet. Ronaldo has been troubled by niggling injuries in the build-up for the World Cup but tonight Portugal need their talismanic captain to fire on all cylinders in order to contain the pre-tournament favourites Germany.

After years of near misses, it is time for Joachim Loew’s team to deliver a trophy which their talent deserves. Germany would be without   danger-man Marco Reus who sustained an ankle sprain which had ruled him out of the tournament but otherwise they are full strength and are favourites to win tonights encounter.

Also, the Germans have history on their side having defeated the Portuguese in their last three competitive meetings but with Cristiano Ronaldo in their midst, Portugal can never be underestimated.
