Sri Lanka following the Indian WC winning mantra?
Playing and Winning against England on their home ground is indeed an Herculean task which the Sri Lankans have performed with full marks!
With Sri Lanka clinching the ODI series on English grounds which is a commendable performance for an Asian team, considering 2007 was the last time an Asian team won against England on their home turf. With a top notch performance at the T20 World Cup which saw Sri Lanka win, we are going to witness a repeat “performacecast” of what India had delivered after winning the T20 world cup in 2007 WC which is one of the most memorable phases of Indian cricket. The then new coach of India, Gary Kirsten had an impact in the performance which led to India lifting the WC 2011. Sri Lanka following a similar pattern which saw their previous coach Graham Ford, leaving the post of Head Coach for Sri Lanka and moving to England to coach Surrey County Cricket Club. There were speculation regarding the ex-coach would reveal team strategies to the English side, but the Sri Lankans has proved their strength with the result.
As a very fine and fruitful choice of the Sri Lankan Cricket Board to choose fellow countrymen to coach the team, Marvan Atapattu who has been successful in putting Sri Lanka on the higher note on English Grounds. Marvan Atapattu has had prior experience of coaching underdog teams like Canada and Singapore and has been successful to gel the team together. When the side has the well-known “Slinger”, Lasith Malinga, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, T. Dilshan and Ajantha Mendis, the side certainly has a smooth blend of all the departments of the game. To add to the list, the likes of Thirumane and present Captain Angelo Mathews, the near future of the Sri Lankan team looks on the rising curve of the graph. With just three quarters of a year left for the ICC World Cup to begin, Sri Lanka would certainly be one of the favourites in terms of their skill and rankings which see them placed at 2 after the clinical series victory against England.
