Will Dunga be a good choice to replace Felipe Scolari as Brazil's new coach?

After the debacle at the World Cup, the Brazilian public were calling for winds of change. But if the media speculation about Dunga being favorite to replace Luiz Felipe Scolari as the coach of the Selecao are true then we won’t be seeing too much of a change. So will it be good decision to appoint Brazil’s 1994 World Cup-winning captain to the hot seat?

Both Dunga and Scolari are known for their pragmatic approach to the game which is a far cry from the flowing attacking football Brazil is known for. So it would be a like-for-like replacement even though change of guard might do the trick as Dunga is known to be a disciplinarian and might bring order to the demoralized unit of players. It would be Dunga’s second spell in-charge of Brazil having managed Brazil between 2006 and 2010. He led the Selecao to victory at the 2007 Copa America and 2009 Confederations Cup before being sacked after their quarter-final exit at the 2010 World Cup. But his time with the Brazilian team is not being remembered with fondness as people were not able to associate his team with the glorious attacking outfits of the yesteryear.

But again the question arises if he is the best man to lead the Selecao. Dunga’s only coaching position since 2010 was a 10-month stint in charge of Brazilian Serie A club Internacional, where he spent a great part of his playing career, but was sacked last October after a fourth successive loss in the Brazilian league that left them mid-table. So surely there are other more suitable candidates in place. There is Tite, who led Corinthians to the World Club Championship in 2012, and Sao Paulo manager Muricy Ramalho who might be better choice for the job. There is also Marcelo Oliveira whose mantra of playing swift, attacking football has made him a popular figure, and also has the credentials to be successful as evidenced by his success with Cruzeiro, whom he guided to the Brazilian title last year.

But we need to consider the fact that the Brazilian football federation would take the decision after much deliberation and even if we don’t see a spectacular Brazil under Dunga, we might see an efficient Brazil like the class of 1994 who can grind out results and win world titles and world titles is what matters to the Brazilians most.
