Will Pep Guardiola's tenure as Bayern Munich manager be termed as successful even though he might not win the Champions League?
Pep Guardiola became one of the most successful coach in the world when he managed arguably one of the best teams in the world of all time in Barcelona. He came through with the best players in the world most of whom had come from the academy and grown together to become the best in the world. He won all the trophies that a team could over a season which contained the most special trophy that all the managers and players aspire to win - Champions League Trophy.
It made him one of the most wanted coach in the world but who would have thought he would leave such a team which has won everything and could continue to do that. But that’s life when you think it’s going to be there forever something happens. There being a bust up Pep Guardiola left Barcelona and joined the best team at that moment ironically the team which had destroyed Barcelona 7-0 in the Champions League. He went to the team which had just won the treble and his job was to continue to make them remain the best in the world.
It’s never easy to follow a team which has won everything they could and thus the job was made even harder thanks to Jupp Heynckes. The side under Jupp played a totally different type of football to the one Pep wants his team to play. This was a team of champions and they had to adapt to a totally new philosophy which ironically they had destroyed the previous season in terms of a 7-0 win against Barca. This team of champions did adapt to the philosophy of Guardiola though and their captain Philip Lahm went on to become the lynchpin of the team after being moved from his position at right back to center midfield.
This team not only adapted the philosophy well but also won the Bundesliga in record number of games. Bayern set a new record for most successive Bundesliga matches without defeat 53 to be precise. This team became one of the best teams in terms of possession following up on Pep’s famous Tiki-Taka style. They also won the DFB-Pokal final to achieve a double.
Such a huge achievement was still an underachievement considering they could not win the Champions League trophy, the trophy which no team has ever retained in its new form. They lost Pep’s old rivals Real Madrid in Champions League due to the fast counter-attacking football played by them. They lost the most coveted trophy in European football. Real Madrid used the same counter attacking football which put Barca’s Tiki-Taka to an end.
This brings up the question of whether he can win the Champions League ever again? As we saw with Spain now the strongest teams in the world know how to counter the Tiki-Taka which used to destroy and frustrate all the opposing teams before. Guardiola believes that he dosen’t need to change the style they play and by this style they surely would continue to win in the Bundesliga where only BVB or Bayer Leverkusen to some extent can give them a fight. Other teams have too tough a job to win against this team which can keep the possession better than anybody else. Even the German cup competitions are going to be dominated by Bayern. But in the Champions League they come up against European Giants who know how to destroy this style and also have the players to back it up. This brings up a question of whether Pep’s tenure will still be called as successful even if he might not win the Champions League ever again?
