Does Rohit Sharma deserve to be in Indian cricket team?
If one has to look at a wasted cricketing talent, he does not need to go further than Rohit Sharma. Poster boy of Mumbai cricket team, there is no denying the fact he has abundant talent but that talent has not been converted into runs. Sure he couldn’t have had a better start to his test career, grabbing Man of the Series in his maiden test series and scoring 2 hundreds in two tests played but he could not repeat the performance in subsequent tests. He averaged a mere 22.33 in next 10 innings. That pretty much sums his cricketing journey, few moments of brilliance interspersed with lot of dejected walk back to pavilion. Such has been his enigma that there is clear distinction between his supporters and detractors.
Some of his most vocal critics are of opinion that he should be rejected outright, but then there are his supporters who believe he should be given some more chances. If we look at tests Ajinkya Rahane has almost secured his place in side at the cost of Rohit Sharma with some decent performances. But there are no other fringe players who can break into current Indian team. Indian batsmen are somewhat susceptible to failure when it comes to test, so should a batsman be replaced Rohit Sharma is next logical choice to replace and that is understandable. But when we consider ODIs the situation is a bit more complex. Indian batting is filled with star studded batsmen with talented fringe players knocking at the door. Up till now his position is more or less secured as an opener but with World Cup lurking there is no scope for complacency. World Cup next year will be played in a lot inimical conditions of Australia and New Zealand where is true talent will be tested. He averages less than 30 in away ODIs which is pretty dismal if you look at other batsmen in the team. Moreover his role as an opener is critical if he fails early then the pressure comes right back on the middle order. The good thing for him is that his opening partner is also out of touch lately so replacing both the openers becomes a bit challenging with few months left for World Cup. Though Sanju Samson and Rahane are vying for the spot of openers but they are predominantly middle order players. And if you consider t20s his spot is more or less secured after decent performances in T20 world cup in Bangladesh.
In a nutshell Rohit Sharma is like a racing car which started briskly but after few laps lost momentum due to snag but still there is a lot more distance to cover and if Rohit Sharma finds the form commensurate to his talent then there is no stopping him. But there are only few games before the hue and cry to remove him from the team gets too loud to ignore. Until then he needs to hope that selectors and Dhoni keep faith in him.
