A Blue Spearhead
Almost 3 and half years later, the nightmare is finally over.
It has seemed like ages now, hasn’t it? Some people are even beginning to think it never even happened. That it was just a myth, and that the men involved were just legends.
Yes, Chelsea FC finally have a real strike-force. Despite struggling with the services (or lack thereof) of the £50 million catastrophe that was Fernando Torres, the return of Jose Mourinho has seen a real attack finally return to Stamford Bridge. Not since Carlo Ancelotti’s fabled first season has a Chelsea striker taken the league by storm; Diego Costa has surely done so.
After a 36-goal campaign that saw a fantastic La Liga victory and a Champions League final, the naturalized Spaniard has been joined by former stalwart Didier Drogba and ex-QPR ace Loic Remy. For the first time in his career, a Jose Mourinho side has scored 16 goals in his first 5 games, and his shiny new strike-force has been responsible for 8 of those. These are heady days for the Stamford Bridge faithful, as they finally look like a team that can cut through any defence again.
What is more, they look well-placed to challenge in Europe once more as Nemanja Matic is no longer cup-tied, and Cesc Fabregas’s arrival from Barcelona has freshened up their engine room.
The most splendid thing about Chelsea’s brand new attack is that each one of their strikers can alter the team’s "profile", as the genial Jose Mourinho likes to put it.
Diego Costa -
The Spaniard is the complete package. He has a tremendous fighting spirit, is pacy and strong on the ball. He can drift out wide, he is strong in the air and he is a innate finisher. He scores goals from anywhere, but is a 6-yard box hunter by nature. Terrific positioning and a huge physical presence make him a truly a spectacular striker when fit and firing - and he’s been injured in each and every one of his Chelsea games. What a frightening prospect.
Loic Remy -
The French striker comes into this Chelsea side keen to prove the world that he can cut it in the biggest of clubs. Having spent successful spells at QPR and Newcastle, the pacy, versatile forward will be snapping at Costa’s heels. He is fast, can play on the wing and has an assured, clinical striker. He is also very keen to pick up on loose balls just inside the box, and will surely provide Chelsea with some crucial goals this season.
Didier Drogba -
The Ivorian tower and Chelsea’s greatest player ever according to supporters is back. He has returned to Stamford Bridge to bring back some of the vast amounts of experience that were lost when top-goalscorer Frank Lampard and unique left-back Ashley Cole left the club. He brings the usual Drogba package back with him - towering headers, a tremendous physicality and a larger-than-life presence on the pitch. Although he may now be two years older than on that fateful night in Munich, him and the evergreen Frank Lampard have shown the world that they will continue to cut it at the highest level until they retire.
An upcoming tie with Manchester’s Citizens will provide a stringent test for the cruising Blues, as Vincent Kompany stands alongside an ageing John Terry and an injured Thiago Silva as the 3 finest defenders in the world. Stopping the Premier League’s in-form striker would come as no surprise to the man who halted Messi in his tracks in both last season’s Champions League and Argentina’s run to the finals. 2 of the Argentinian back four will also be present here, as a resurgent Demichelis and the ever-dependable Pablo Zabaleta face Chelsea’s fantastic midfield trio.
For now, the Stamford Bridge side will be willing their brand new attack on to glory, as Roman Abramovich’s gleeful smiles are echoed in roars of "Diego Costa".
This is Chelsea 2.0, and once again, its that man Jose Mourinho making them killers.
